6 Days Lemosho Route

The Lemosho route is a superb choice for your climb. It is our preferred route due to its ideal balance of low traffic, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate. It approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, starting with a long drive to Londorossi Gate. The first two days are spent trekking through the rainforest to Shira Ridge.

Lemosho route crosses the entirety of the plain from the west to east in a pleasant, relatively flat hike, unlike Machame route which simply intersects the Shira Plateau. An added bonus of taking this scenic route is that, you will encounter low traffic until the route joins the popular Machame route. Afterwards, Lemosho follows the same route through Lava Tower, Barranco and Barafu, known as the southern circuit. Descent is made via the Mweka route.

A guide and support crew will arrive in the morning in order to meet you and hold another briefing. Then you will travel by vehicle for 3-4 hours to the western entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park, known as Londorossi Gate (2,200 m). After another few hours of formalities with the park rangers at the gate and you will be on the trail. Then you will drive for another hour to reach the drop off location. The group will stop for a light snack then start the 5-6 hour hike towards Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m). Shira 2 Camp is the best place on the trip to see Mount Meru (the fifth summit of Africa), weather permitting.

At night you may experience discomfort associated with acclimatization to the high altitude: because of a reduction in your waking breathing pattern, your body gets less oxygen than during the day. Taking altitude into account, you may therefore start feeling sick and have a headache. Pay attention to your own body and tell your guide if you start feeling any symptoms of altitude sickness.
