The Rongai Route is one of the less crowded and more remote routes up Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its beautiful scenery and a higher success rate due to a slower acclimatization profile. Most climbers opt for a 6 to 7-day itinerary to give themselves the best chance of reaching the summit successfully. The 7-day Rongai Route is a popular and scenic climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. This route is one of the several trekking routes available for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and the less difficult routes up Mount Kilimanjaro via the Rongai route. Kilimanjaro can only be approached from the north by the Rongai route, while the Marangu route is used for the descent.

After departing Moshi, you will travel through the coffee plantations and the village of Nale Muru for four to five hours before arriving at the Rongai Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. We will wait patiently for the issuance of our permits while seeing the flurry of activity as other crews get ready for the voyage ahead. Enjoy the lovely forested surroundings and winding paths while your guide informs you about the native plants and animals that you might encounter. Simba Camp offers breathtaking views of the Kenyan plains and is located close to the first cave at the edge of the moorland zone.
After a good night sleep and a hearty breakfast, we continue along moorland terrain on a consistent ascending path. You will catch some terrific views of Kibo and get your first glimpse of the ice fields on the Eastern crater rim. The small shrubs of the moorland became thinner as you approve the Second Cave. Temperatures begin to drop.
After breakfast and packing, you continue your stead ascent across the Moorland towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. This relatively short hiking day brings you closer to the Easter ice fields, continually drawing your attention to their beauty. Pay attention to your body and keep your guide informed of any signs of altitude sickness.
Wonderful views are offered after a brief but strenuous walk up grassy slopes. Shortly before you get at the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn, which is magnificently located in a cirque just below the soaring peaks of Mawenzi, leave the vegetation behind. In order to help with acclimatization, you are welcome to use the afternoon to relax or explore the neighborhood. You will camp here for two nights if you choose to stay on the mountain for an additional day. As a walk to acclimatize yourself, you might walk up and around Mawenzi.
Cross the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent on Summit Night.
Very early in the morning, you’ll start your summit attempt from Kibo Hut, reaching Gillman's Point on the crater rim (5,685 meters or 18,651 feet), and then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro (5,895 meters or 19,341 feet, at sunrise. Descend back to Kibo Hut. Continue descend back to Horombo Hut (around 3,720 meters or 12,205 feet) for overnight.
Your final day involves descending to Marangu Gate and complete your Kilimanjaro trek, where you'll receive your summit certificates. From there, you'll be transported back to Moshi. We strongly advise using trekking poles and gaiters due to the steep, muddy, and rainy terrain caused by the significantly warmer temperatures. A car will pick you up at the gate and take you back to your Moshi hotel (about 45 minutes).
