The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's most immersive and rewarding trekking experience, offering a unique and comprehensive journey around the mountain. As the newest and longest of the eight established routes, it stands out for its exceptional acclimatization profile, allowing climbers to gradually adjust to the altitude with fewer challenges during daily hikes. This makes it an ideal choice for those who prefer a more relaxed pace without compromising on the quality of the experience.
On summit day, the Northern Circuit rewards your efforts with an unforgettable ascent to Uhuru Peak. Here, you’ll witness a spectacular sunrise over the glaciers and the vast African landscape—an experience that few other routes can offer. For those seeking an even deeper adventure, the option to spend an extra night in the Crater is available, offering a rare opportunity to explore Kilimanjaro's inner world.
The Northern Circuit is more than just a climb; it’s a journey through some of the most stunning and varied landscapes in Tanzania, all while offering the best possible conditions for a successful summit. Whether you’re an experienced trekker or new to high-altitude hiking, this route provides an unparalleled adventure on the "Roof of Africa."

Your day begins with a hearty breakfast and a final briefing at the hotel before embarking on a 3-4 hour drive to the Londorossi Gate (2,250m / 7,380ft), the western entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. After securing the necessary permits, you’ll continue by vehicle to the drop-off point at 3,610m (11,841ft). Here, you'll be treated to the breathtaking vistas of the Shira Plateau as you begin your trek to Shira 1 Camp. The route is relatively easy, allowing you to start acclimatizing while enjoying the incredible scenery. Upon arrival, you'll find your camp set up, with refreshments and a full dinner awaiting you.
Note: This is your first day at high altitude. It's crucial to drink plenty of water and consider taking altitude sickness medication as a preventive measure. Listen to your body and inform your guide if you experience any symptoms.
Trekking Time: 1 hour
Distance: 4 km
Today’s trek offers a gradual ascent from Shira 1 Camp (3,850m / 12,631ft) to Shira 2 Camp. With a modest altitude gain, you’ll have ample time to absorb Kilimanjaro’s unique landscape, including the endemic flora and, if the weather permits, spectacular views of Mount Meru. After lunch, you’ll have the opportunity for an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower, which will help your body adjust to the higher altitude.
Acclimatization Hike Elevation: Shira 2 Camp (3,850m / 12,631ft) to Lava Tower route point (4,110m / 13,484ft)
Hiking Distance: 2 km (acclimatization), 7 km (main trek)
Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
Departing from Shira 2 Camp, you’ll trek towards the Lava Tower (4,600m / 15,088ft), a significant landmark on the mountain. This day is more challenging due to the altitude, but you’ll be rewarded with a break at Lava Tower for lunch and rest before descending slightly to Moir Hut Camp.
Trekking Time: 5-7 hours
Distance: 14 km
This day features a longer trek, though the route is mostly moderate with gradual ascents and descents. You’ll start with a short, steep climb out of the Moir Valley, then follow the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. As you approach the Kenyan border, the views of the Tsavo and Amboseli valleys are truly spectacular.
Trekking Time: 5-7 hours
Distance: 12 km
You’ll continue trekking along the northern slope, eventually reaching 3rd Cave Camp, where the route merges with the classic Rongai route. By now, your body should be well acclimated to the altitude, making for a more comfortable trek.
Trekking Time: 4-6 hours
Distance: 8 km
Today’s trek leads you to School Hut (4,800m / 15,744ft), the final camp before your summit push. The terrain is manageable, but it's important to conserve your energy for the challenging ascent to the summit. Once at School Hut, you’ll be advised to rest early and hydrate well in preparation for the summit attempt.
Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
Distance: 5 km
Your summit bid begins at midnight, as you ascend from School Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341ft), the highest point in Africa. The climb is not technically difficult, but the high altitude makes it strenuous. After reaching the summit, you’ll descend to Barafu Camp for a short break before continuing to Millennium Camp (3,950m / 12,956ft) for the night.
Note: The descent can be tricky—take care to avoid falls and injuries.
Trekking Time: 10-13 hours
Distance: 16 km
Your final descent takes you through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m / 5,379ft), where you’ll receive your summit certificates. Afterward, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
Distance: 12 km
Enjoy a relaxing morning at the hotel before your transfer to the airport. If you have a late flight, you may arrange for a late check-out at an additional cost.
