Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate, where you’ll check in and prepare for your trek. As you ascend through lush tropical rainforests, keep an eye out for vibrant wildlife, including playful Colobus monkeys. After approximately 4-5 hours of hiking (8 km / 5 miles), you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut, nestled at an altitude of about 2,700 meters (8,858 feet). Here, you can relax and enjoy the serene surroundings.
On Day 2, you’ll continue your ascent from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut. The trail opens up into stunning moorland, offering breathtaking views of the majestic peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Expect to hike for around 6-8 hours (12 km / 7 miles) before reaching Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720 meters (12,205 feet). Take some time to acclimatize and soak in the panoramic vistas.
Day 3 is dedicated to acclimatization—a crucial step in preparing your body for higher altitudes. Spend this day exploring the nearby Mawenzi Ridge or simply relaxing at Horombo Hut. This gentle hike will help your body adjust while providing spectacular views of Kibo Peak. Enjoy a leisurely hike lasting about 2-3 hours as you ascend to around 4,400 meters (14,400 feet) before returning to Horombo Hut.
As you set off towards Kibo Hut, prepare for a more challenging day ahead. The terrain transitions into an alpine desert landscape characterized by volcanic rock formations. The hike takes about 6-8 hours (10 km / 6 miles), culminating at an altitude of approximately 4,750 meters (15,430 feet). Once settled in at Kibo Hut, organize your gear and rest up for the big summit push ahead!
The final day is both exhilarating and demanding! You’ll wake up around midnight and begin your ascent towards Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa—at approximately 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). This leg involves navigating rocky terrain under starlit skies with the goal of reaching Gilman’s Point by dawn. After taking in the breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak, continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Celebrate your achievement before descending back down to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest.
