Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route is an adventurous and scenic journey that approaches the mountain from the northeastern side. Unlike some other routes, the Rongai Route is less crowded, making it a great option for those seeking a quieter and more peaceful trek. The route takes you through diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, and offers stunning views of the mountain from different angles. The Rongai route has a relatively high summit success rate of around 85–90%. The gradual ascent and better acclimatisation opportunities contribute to this positive outcome, making it a suitable choice for those seeking a successful summit attempt.
The Rongai route is considered moderately challenging. It involves long hiking days, and trekkers should be in good physical condition. The altitude gains are more gradual compared to other routes, which eases the physical demand, but prior trekking experience is still recommended. Mount Kilimanjaro stands tall at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) above sea level. The Rongai route will take you through diverse ecological zones, starting in lush forests and gradually ascending through moorlands and alpine deserts, culminating in the glaciated summit.

Your climb begins at the Rongai Gate, where you'll complete the necessary registration and meet your mountain crew, including guides, porters, and a cook. The trail starts in the montane rainforest, where you might spot some wildlife and various bird species. The hike on the first day is relatively easy and serves as an excellent warm-up for the upcoming days. After about 3 to 4 hours of hiking, you'll arrive at Simba Camp, your first overnight campsite.
Today's trek takes you through moorland vegetation, where you'll notice a change in the landscape as you gain altitude. The path becomes steeper and occasionally rocky, but the stunning scenery of Kilimanjaro's northern side keeps you motivated. After approximately 6 to 7 hours of hiking, you'll reach Second Cave Camp, situated at a higher elevation.
Continuing through the moorland, you'll encounter the distinctive "Saddle," a high-altitude desert plateau that lies between Kilimanjaro's two peaks: Kibo and Mawenzi. The hike is relatively shorter today, taking about 4 to 5 hours. Upon reaching Kikelewa Camp, you'll have time to rest and acclimatise to the increasing altitude.
Today's trek will take you further into the alpine desert zone. You'll leave the moorland behind and enter the rocky terrain with magnificent views of Mawenzi, one of Kilimanjaro's volcanic peaks. Mawenzi Tarn Camp is nestled in a valley near a small lake, providing a picturesque setting for your overnight stay. The day's hike may take around 4 to 6 hours.
As you approach the summit, the terrain becomes more barren and lunar-like. You'll continue ascending towards Kibo Hut, which serves as the base camp for both the Rongai and Marangu Routes to the summit. The hike is relatively challenging and may take about 5 to 7 hours. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you'll have an early dinner and rest before the summit attempt.
Around midnight, you'll start the summit attempt. The climb to the summit is steep and challenging, taking you along a switchback trail called the "Coca-Cola" route. You'll pass Gilman's Point, situated at the crater rim, and then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The sunrise from the summit is a breathtaking experience. After spending some time at the peak, you'll begin your descent back to Kibo Hut and then further down to Horombo Hut, where you'll rest for the night.
On the final day, you'll descend through the rainforest to the Marangu Gate, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro climb. At the gate, you'll receive your summit certificates and have a chance to celebrate your accomplishment with your mountain crew. From there, you'll be transferred back to Moshi, where you can rest and reflect on your remarkable journey.
