After an early breakfast at your accommodation, you'll be transported from Moshi to the Londrossi gate. Upon arrival, porters will organize and prepare your gear for the trek, while you and your fellow trekkers register with the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA) at the waiting lounge. Commence your ascent into the lush rainforest, where you'll encounter rain, mud, and fog. Keep an eye out for wildlife, particularly the graceful Colobus monkeys! Midway through the trail, pause for a lunch break before continuing your journey. By late afternoon or early evening, you'll reach the Big Tree Camp
• Rise (ft): 9,500 feet to 11,500 feet
• Stretch: 8 km
• Climbing time: 5–6 hours
• Climatic Habitat: Moorland
At Shira 1 Camp, climbers will continue to follow the trail leading out of the forest and into the savannah of tall grasses and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira ridge before dropping gently down to Shira Camp 1.
On this day, our journey continues upwards, offering expansive panoramic vistas as we traverse through the high-altitude desert climate and along the lava ridges beneath the majestic glaciers of the Western Breach. We'll have the privilege of gazing upon the Northern ice fields from the western flank of Mount Kilimanjaro, affording us unique perspectives of Kibo Peak. Our gradual ascent through the moorland of the Shira Plateau will aid in acclimatization, accompanied by breathtaking panoramic vistas. Eventually, we'll arrive at the Shira II Camp. Later in the afternoon, we'll embark on an acclimatization stroll before returning to camp for dinner and overnight rest.
Today's pace is deliberately unhurried as we approach the border of the heather and moorland, transitioning into the Alpine desert towards the northern region of Kilimanjaro. An optional detour presents itself through the lava tower camp, a prime opportunity for acclimatization.
Departing from Moir Camp, you will pass by the striking lava tower, an iconic volcanic formation. From there, the trail ascends to Barranco Camp, situated at an elevation of 1300 feet. The unique landscapes and the sense of accomplishment propel you forward as you approach your final camp before the summit push.
You will leave Barranco behind and continue your ascent to Karanga Camp. The trail presents a mix of challenges and rewards, including the famous Barranco Wall. As you reach Karanga camp, located at 13,100 feet, the higher altitude becomes palpable, setting the stage for the approaching summit attempt.
Following breakfast, climbers depart Karanga and proceed towards the junction linking with the Mweka trail. The ascent continues toward Barafu Camp, marking the completion of the south circuit, showcasing stunning views of the summit from various perspectives. Here, we establish our camp, take respite, savor dinner, and ready ourselves for the forthcoming summit day
From midnight to 2 a.m., the hiker and the team will continue hiking toward the summit between the Rebmann and Reitzel glaciers. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek at Stella Point. You will stop for a short rest and be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you have ever seen. Once at Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. We will descend to Mweka Camp and enjoy our last night on Mount Kilimanjaro
After enjoying a half-board meal following breakfast, both climbers and guides commence their descent towards Mweka Park Gate, where hiker summit certificates await. This day affords ample opportunity for reflection upon the remarkable journey undertaken.
