The first day of the Rongai trek begins at the Rongai gate, which is located on the northern side of Kilimanjaro. After completing the necessary registration procedures, the trek starts by walking through farmland and pine forest. The trail then enters a vast stretch of moorland where you will see views of the summit. After a few hours of trekking, you will reach the Simba campsite, where you will rest and spend the night.
Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Overnight Altitude: 9,300 ft.
After breakfast, the trek continues through the moorland, where you will have a chance to see the Mawenzi peak, you will then reach the second cave, which is the halfway point to Kibo. The trek then climbs steadily towards the Kikelewa campsite, which is located at the edge of the moorland zone. Here, you will rest and spend the night.

This day’s trek begins by crossing a stream, then moving into a semi-desert terrain towards the Mawenzi Tarn campsite. The campsite is located below Mawenzi peak and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Here, you will rest and spend the night.
Hiking time: 3-4 hours
After breakfast, the trek continues towards Kibo Hut. The trail passes through the “saddle,” which is the area located between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. As you trek through this area, you will notice a change in vegetation from alpine desert to a rocky lunar landscape. After reaching Kibo Hut, you will rest and prepare for the summit climb.
Hiking time: 6-8hours
Overnight Altitude: 15,430ft.
This is the summit day. The trek begins in the early hours of the morning (around midnight) and heads up to Gilman’s point on the crater rim, where you will watch the sunrise. From Gilman’s point, the trek continues to Uhuru Peak, which is the highest point in Africa. You will then begin the descent back to Kibo Hut for a rest and a meal before continuing down to Horombo Hut for the night.

After reaching the Mandara hut, you will then trek back to the Rongai gate, where you will sign out and receive your summit certificates. Your trek is complete, and you can celebrate your achievement
The Rongai Route requires the fewest days (6), but when arrival and departure days are factored in, the total number of days required is 9 or 10. However, because it is the easiest route on the mountain, it is best completed over 7 days to increase your chances of success.
