The Umbwe Route is a hidden gem among Kilimanjaro’s trails, offering a more secluded and adventurous ascent. Known for its steep initial climb, the route may seem challenging at first, but it remains accessible to many hikers, especially those seeking a less crowded experience. Starting on the southern flank of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Umbwe Route merges with the Lemosho and Machame routes by the third day, just before the iconic Barranco Wall.
One of the standout features of the Umbwe Route is the solitude it provides during the first two days, where you’ll rarely encounter other trekkers. This route is available in both 6 and 7-day itineraries, with the 7-day option being ideal for those without prior acclimatization. As you journey along this route, you’ll be treated to some of Kilimanjaro’s most breathtaking scenery, traversing diverse climatic zones and encountering unique flora and fauna along the way. The Umbwe Route offers an unforgettable and visually spectacular adventure on Africa’s highest peak.

In the evening, you'll have a briefing with our team to go over your trek details and ensure you're fully prepared for the climb.
In the morning, your guide and support crew will meet you at the hotel for final introductions and an equipment check before driving to the Umbwe Gate (1,800 m / 5,904 ft), the starting point of your Kilimanjaro adventure. After finalizing permits and registration, you’ll begin your ascent through the rainforest, heading towards Umbwe Camp (2,850 m / 9,348 ft). Expect a significant altitude gain, so maintaining a steady pace is key. Your camp will be set up by the time you arrive, with dinner ready to help you recharge.

After an early breakfast, the trek continues through changing landscapes as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. If the skies are clear, you’ll get your first glimpse of the Meru Volcano. By lunchtime, you’ll reach Barranco Camp (3,900 m / 12,792 ft), located within a large volcanic crater.
