The journey typically starts at Londorossi Gate, where you'll register and meet your guides and porters. From there, you'll drive to the trailhead and begin your trek through the lush rainforest. The first day's hike is relatively gentle, taking you to the Forest Camp at around 2,650 meters (8,700 feet) above sea level.
You'll continue your ascent through the rainforest, and as you gain altitude, the vegetation changes to moorland. The trail steepens as you approach the Shira Plateau, where you'll spend the night at Shira Camp 1, situated at around 3,500 meters (11,500 feet).
Today's hike takes you further across the Shira Plateau, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. You'll ascend to Shira Camp 2, located at approximately 3,840 meters (12,600 feet). This day serves as an acclimatization day, allowing your body to adjust to the increasing altitude.
The trail gradually ascends towards Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation at an altitude of about 4,630 meters (15,190 feet). This is often a challenging day due to the altitude, but it's crucial for acclimatization. After lunch at Lava Tower, you'll descend to Barranco Camp, situated at around 3,950 meters (12,960 feet).
The day begins with a steep climb up the Barranco Wall, which offers exhilarating scrambling opportunities and rewarding views. After conquering the wall, the trail winds through alpine desert terrain to Karanga Camp, located at approximately 4,035 meters (13,200 feet).
Today's hike takes you to Barafu Camp, the high camp situated at around 4,600 meters (15,100 feet). The trail gradually ascends through barren landscapes, and as you approach Barafu, the air becomes noticeably thinner. This is your base camp for the summit attempt, and you'll rest and prepare for the final push overnight.
You'll wake up in the early hours of the morning for the summit attempt. The ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), is challenging both physically and mentally but incredibly rewarding. After witnessing the sunrise from the summit, you'll begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp, situated at around 3,100 meters (10,170 feet).
