The climb begins at the Londorossi Gate, located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. From there, you will trek through lush rainforest, encountering various species of flora and fauna along the way. The first day's hike is relatively easy and serves as a warm-up for the days to come. You will reach the Mti Mkubwa Camp at an elevation of around 9,000 feet (2,743 meters) where you will spend your first night.
On the second day, you will continue through the rainforest until you reach the Shira Plateau. This section of the climb offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. As you ascend to an altitude of approximately 12,500 feet (3,810 meters), you will notice a change in vegetation from rainforest to heathland. From Shira Camp 1, you will proceed to Shira Camp 2 at an elevation of about 13,000 feet (3,962 meters). This part of the climb involves crossing vast expanses of high-altitude desert known as the "moonscape." The terrain becomes more rugged and rocky as you approach your destination. The panoramic views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau make this section particularly memorable.
On the next day, you will leave Shira Camp 2 and head towards the Lava Tower, which stands at approximately 15,190 feet (4,630 meters). This is a crucial acclimatization day as you will climb to a higher altitude and then descend to Barranco Camp at around 13,000 feet (3,962 meters) for overnight rest. The descent helps your body adjust to the altitude and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.
The day involves tackling the Barranco Wall, a steep and challenging section of the route. Climbers will need to use their hands and feet to navigate this rocky scramble. Once you conquer the wall, you will continue along the southern circuit, passing through Karanga Valley before reaching Karanga Camp at an elevation of about 13,100 feet (3,993 meters). This campsite offers stunning views of the glaciers on Kilimanjaro. Then you’ll begins with a relatively short hike from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp at approximately 15,331 feet (4,670 meters). This campsite serves as a base for the summit attempt and allows climbers to rest and prepare for the challenging ascent ahead.
After a few hours of rest, you will embark on the midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro at 19,341 feet (5,895 meters). The climb is demanding but incredibly rewarding as you witness the sunrise from the roof of Africa. After reaching Uhuru Peak, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for a well-deserved rest shortly and continuing down to Mweka Camp for overnight.
The final day involves descending through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. After reaching the gate, you'll receive your summit certificates and say goodbye to your guides and porters. From Mweka Gate, you'll be transported back to your accommodations in Moshi or Arusha.
