The Machame Route starts on the southwestern side of the mountain and follows a gradual ascent through various ecological zones. The route is also known as the "Whiskey Route" due to its reputation for being more challenging than other routes like the Marangu Route, which is often referred to as the "Coca-Cola Route."

The climb begins at Machame Gate (1,800 meters) and takes you through the lush rainforest. The trail gradually ascends, providing an opportunity to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys and various bird species. After approximately 5-7 hours of hiking, you will reach Machame Camp (3,000 meters) where you will spend your first night.
The second day involves a steep ascent through heather and moorland. You will pass through Shira Plateau and witness stunning views of the mountain's western breach. After around 4-6 hours of hiking, you will reach Shira Camp (3,840 meters) where you will spend the night.
On this day, you will continue your ascent towards Lava Tower (4,630 meters), which provides a great opportunity for acclimatization. The trail then descends to Barranco Camp (3,950 meters), passing through the beautiful Barranco Wall. This section requires some scrambling but offers incredible views of the surrounding landscape. The total hiking time for the day is approximately 6-8 hours.
The fourth day involves a relatively short but steep climb to Karanga Camp (4,035 meters). This campsite is situated on a ridge, offering panoramic views of the mountain. The hike takes around 3-4 hours, allowing for ample rest and acclimatization in the afternoon.
From Karanga Camp, you will continue your ascent to Barafu Camp (4,640 meters), the base camp for summiting Kilimanjaro. The trail becomes steeper as you approach the alpine desert zone. After approximately 3-4 hours of hiking, you will reach Barafu Camp where you will rest and prepare for the summit attempt.
The sixth day begins with a midnight start to reach the summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters). The climb is challenging and requires mental and physical strength. You will ascend through scree slopes and face freezing temperatures. After around 6-8 hours of climbing, you will reach Stella Point (5,739 meters), located on the crater rim. From there, it takes another 1-2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and taking in the breathtaking views, you will descend back up to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
The final day involves descending from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters). The trail passes through the rainforest, providing a refreshing end to your journey. After approximately 4-6 hours of hiking, you will reach Mweka Gate where you will receive your summit certificates and celebrate your successful climb. From the Mweka village you'll be transfered back to your accomodation in Moshi city.
