The Marangu route is one of the most known trekking routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is often referred to as the "Coca-Cola" route because it is considered one of the easier routes and provides huts with basic amenities along the way. A typical Marangu route trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro takes around 5 to 6 days, with 6-days of trekking and an optional acclimatization day. It's important to be physically prepared and take your time to acclimatize properly. Before attempting the climb, make sure you're well-informed about the necessary gear, physical fitness, and the effects of high altitude.

You’ll start at Marangu Gate (1,860 meters or 6,100 feet) where you'll register with the park authorities and hike to Mandara Hut (2,700 meters or 8,858 feet) through the rainforest, which is teeming with wildlife and bird species. The trek is relatively easy on the first day. Reach Mandara Hut, where you'll spend your first night. The huts provide basic amenities such as bunk beds and communal dining areas.
You continue through the rainforest to Horombo Hut (3,720 meters or 12,205 feet). This is a longer day of hiking, and you'll start to notice the change in vegetation and terrain as you ascend. As you continue your ascent through the moorland and heath zone. Pass the Maundi Crater and enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak and the Kenyan plains. Reach Horombo Hut, where you'll spend the second night.
This is an acclimatization day to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude. You can take short hikes in the area or simply rest at the hut. Staying at the same altitude for an extra day helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
You hike to Kibo Hut (4,700 meters or 15,420 feet), which is the last stop before attempting the summit. Ascend to the barren alpine desert zone. Pass the Last Water Point and the Saddle, a wide, flat area between Kibo and Mawenzi. Arrive at Kibo Hut, your last stop before the summit. You'll rest here briefly before attempting the summit.
Wake up very early, around midnight, for your summit attempt. Hike to Gillman's Point (5,681 meters), the crater rim, where you'll witness an incredible sunrise. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. Descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.
Descend through the rainforest, retracing your steps back to the Marangu Gate, where you will receive your summit certificates, complete the necessary paperwork and celebrate your achievement.
