Your journey begins with a pick-up from your hotel and a drive to Marangu Gate, where you will complete the necessary registration. The hike starts with a gradual ascent through the dense, lush rainforest, where you might spot colobus monkeys and various bird species. The trail is well-defined and offers a pleasant introduction to the climb. After about 4-5 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop. If time permits, take a short walk to Maundi Crater for a beautiful view of the surrounding area.

After a 6-7 hour hike, you’ll arrive at Horombo Hut, where you can enjoy the panoramic views and rest for the night. Horombo Hut is a bustling camp, often hosting climbers who are both ascending and descending.

Today’s hike takes you through the alpine desert towards Kibo Hut, the base camp for your summit attempt. You’ll pass the “Last Water Point,” as well as the famous Zebra Rocks, named for their distinctive black and white stripes. The final approach to Kibo Hut is a steady climb, and the air becomes noticeably thinner. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you’ll have an early dinner and rest in preparation for the midnight summit push.

Your summit day begins around midnight. The most challenging part of the climb awaits, with a steep ascent on loose volcanic scree. You’ll reach Gilman’s Point at 5,685m (18,652ft) just in time to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the Mawenzi peak. From here, the trail continues along the crater rim to Stella Point and finally to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement with photos and a moment to take in the incredible views before beginning your descent. You’ll return to Kibo Hut for a short rest and lunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.
